Every Shape Begins with a Curve

Chapter 1 — The First Curve

When people look at a finished logo, they rarely think about how it came to life.

They see a leaf.

A bird.

A mountain.

A letter.

A symbol that somehow feels complete.

What they don't see is the very beginning.

Not the software.

Not the mouse.

Not even the sketch.

Just a single curve.

It Doesn't Look Like Anything

This is where almost every project begins.

Not with a finished idea.

Not with inspiration.

Just with one line.

At this point, it isn't a leaf.

It isn't a logo.

It isn't even part of a drawing.

It's simply a curve.

If I showed it to ten people, I would probably get ten different answers.

A bridge.

A rainbow.

A smile.

An arch.

None of them would be wrong.

Why Start Here?

Because every complex shape can be broken down into something much simpler.

When I'm designing, I almost never think about the final illustration.

That would be overwhelming.

Instead, I ask a much smaller question.

Does this curve feel right?

Not mathematically.

Visually.

Does it have enough tension?

Is it too flat?

Too symmetrical?

Too dramatic?

Tiny adjustments completely change how we perceive a shape.

Moving one control point by a few pixels can make a curve feel calm.

Or dynamic.

Or mechanical.

Or organic.

The Interesting Part

Nothing useful exists yet.

There is no icon.

No logo.

No illustration.

No client would approve this as a finished design.

And yet...

This might be the most important decision in the entire process.

Every curve that follows will inherit something from this first one.

Its rhythm.

Its proportions.

Its personality.

Looking Ahead

The next curve won't complete the drawing either.

It will simply start a conversation with the first one.

And somewhere between two seemingly meaningless lines...

our brains will suddenly begin to recognize a shape.
